Craniomandibular disfunction – What? How?

Scientifical evidence prove that odontology is a branch of medicine which is not limited to diagnostics and treatment of diseases in oral cavity and jaws. Many health problems are associated with masticatory apparatus disorders.

Craniomandibular dysfunction (CMD) is a systemic disease of the Craniomandibular Feed-Back-System, a disease of the muscles and nerves of the head-shoulder region. It is mainly caused by malpositioned and malinclined teeth with resulting dysfunction during masticatory activities and swallowing. (G. Risse)

Symptoms of craniomandibular dysfunction:

Headaches in the temples region
Headaches in the area of forehead and eyes
Headaches in the back of the head, possibly extending to the shoulders
Pain in the jaws
Clicking of the mandible
"Full eyes"
Pressure on the eyes, sensitivity to light
Pain in the neck, shoulder and back/ tensions
Trigeminus pain
Dizzy spells, vertigo, nausea
Loss of concentration

These symptoms quite often mislead specialists of other medicine areas (neurologists, ophthalmologists, otolaryngologists, osteopaths, physiotherapists, etc.).

According to previous studies, 20% of the population earlier of later have craniomandibular disorders (Douglas. H. Morgan, Leland, R. House, William P. Hall, S. James Vamvas. Diseases of the temporomandibular apparatus, Mosby, 1982). Prof. med. dr. dent. dr. h.c. Georg B. Meyer (Ernst Moritz Arndt University Greifswald, Germany) publicated (2004): "25-40% 6-8 years old children with malocclusion or improper jaw position suffer from latent craniomandibular dysfunction. Reponsibility of odontology is to convert this scientific data to medical practice“.

Latest studies show that over 50 % of population suffer from craniomandibular disorders because every time more symptoms are being related to this pathology (Institute of Craniomandibular Dysfunction, ICMD). Sustained practice and scientific interest in craniomandibular dysfunction show an increasing problem in Lithuania and all Eastern Europe where many years of direct teeth restorations and prosthetics were adjusted regardless to function and biomechanics of craniomandibular system.

Chairman Nauchnogo and Organizational Committees

Oral health is a part of general human health and quality of life

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 60-90% school children and nearly 100% adult people have dental caries. Caries treatment requires teeth restorations and their quality may change the anatomy and function directly causing occlusal discrepancies, periodontal diseases, dysfunction of muscles, joints and masticatory system.

15-20% middle-aged (35-44 years) adults suffer from periodontal diseases, which quite often leads to teeth loss resulting defects in dental arches, disturbing biomechanical principals of occlusion and articulation.

Everyone in his life several time visits dental surgery. Dentist can diagnose and remove occlusal disturbances to prevent craniomandibular dysfunction. Unfortunately, occlusal disturbances seem to win this battle.

Do not forget congenital and acquired skull – face – jaw defects in children and adults, malocclusions and problems because of psychoemotional stress.

Therefore the symptoms of craniomandibular dysfunction are diagnosed to more than 75% of population and every time more symptoms are being related to craniomandibular and temporomandibular areas: headaches in the temples region, headaches in the area of forehead and eyes, headaches in the back of the head (possibly extending to the shoulders), pain in the jaws, clicking of the mandible, "Full eyes", tinnitus, pressure in the eyes, sensitivity to light, pain in the neck, shoulder and back, tensions, trigeminus pain, dizzy spells, vertigo, nausea, loss of concentration, "Migraine" and sleep disorders.

It is obvious that symptoms of craniomandibular dysfunction spread further from odontology and overlap with neurology, otolaryngology, osteopathy and other branches of medicine, therefore work in team is especially important for precise craniomandibular disorders diagnostics, treatment and rehabilitation.

You are cordially invited to scientific practical 1st International Eastern European Conference – Interdisciplinary Aspects of Craniomandibular Disorders: to meet, to share latest scientific findings and practical experience, to open new perspectives for collaboration.

We are glad you to welcome,
